If you're considering studying abroad, Belarus probably isn't the first country that comes to mind — but for a growing number of international students, it's becoming one of the smartest choices available. Here's what you actually need to know, from costs to daily life, written by a team that lives in Belarus and supports students through the entire process.
Why students choose Belarus
Three things come up again and again when our students explain why they chose Belarus over other destinations:
- Cost. Tuition and living costs are a fraction of equivalent programs in Western Europe, the UK or North America — without a corresponding drop in academic quality.
- Strong technical universities. Belarus has a long-standing reputation in IT, engineering and the sciences, sometimes called the "Silicon Valley of Eastern Europe."
- Safety. Belarus has low crime rates, which matters a lot when you're settling into a new country far from home.
Universities and programs
Escle partners with six established public universities: BSUIR, BNTU, BSU, BSTU, BrSU, GrAU. Between them, our students most commonly choose:
- IT & Computer Science — software engineering, computer science, electronics and telecommunications, led by BSUIR.
- Engineering & Technology — mechanical, civil, energy, transport and architectural engineering at BNTU and BSTU.
- Business, Economics & Law — management, economics, finance, international relations and law at BSU.
- Agribusiness & Sciences — agricultural economics, veterinary medicine and natural sciences at GrAU and BrSU.
Every university offers a wider range of specializations than this list suggests — if you have something specific in mind, tell us and we'll check which university and program fits best.
What language are programs taught in?
Most programs are taught in Russian, often preceded by a preparatory year that brings you up to the required language level. Some programs and faculties also offer instruction in English. Our team will help you understand the language requirements for your specific program before you apply, and we provide translation support throughout your studies regardless of which language track you choose.
How much does it cost?
Costs vary by university, program and city — which is exactly why we don't publish a single headline number. Instead, every student who works with us receives a full written breakdown covering tuition, our service fee, visa costs, accommodation and registration, before they commit to anything. For a general sense of day-to-day living costs, see our cost of living guide.
The application process, in brief
- We assess your academic background, goals and budget, and shortlist suitable universities and programs.
- We help you prepare and submit your application through the go.in-belarus.com platform.
- Once accepted, we guide you through document preparation, legalization and your student visa application — see our visa guide for details.
- We meet you at the airport when you arrive, help you find accommodation, and handle your mandatory local registration.
- Our team stays available throughout your studies for translation, paperwork, and anything unexpected that comes up.
Life in Belarus as an international student
Most of our students live in Minsk, Brest or Grodno — all cities with functioning public transport, affordable groceries, and an increasingly international student population. The biggest adjustment for most students isn't the cost or the academics, it's the bureaucracy: registration, paperwork, and official processes that work very differently from what you're used to. That's precisely the gap our team exists to close — we've sat in the same queues and called the same offices, so you don't have to figure it out alone.
Next steps
If studying in Belarus sounds like it could be a fit, the best next step is simply to talk to us. We'll ask about your background and goals, recommend a university and program, and send over a full cost breakdown — no obligation, no pressure.
